Twitter turned off the API and locked everyone out 🤣 Mastodon signups rocketed as a result.

There's fediverse drama over the HP^* game, with a prominent masto instance shutting down over harassment after the admin refused to ban people tooting about the game. Sure, he had a untidy meltdown in the process, but based on reports, it's not terribly surprising. Seriously, people, hate does not fix hate.

This Week I Learned

That my brain still goes kerplooey when I try to learn javascript, but I am slowly starting to be able to modify bits and pieces.

Writing

Still plugging away at this fuck or die that ate my brain. I've almost completely rewritten chapter 1, and I'm glad I didn't get around to transcribing chapter 2 yet, because I'm going to be rewriting that significantly as well.

Watching

New shows! Yay! Shows out of hiatus! Yay!

The Chemistry of Death is rather nice so far. Creepy procedural FTW.

I also like the fungus zombie show.

Winchesters spoilers

The Winchesters got interesting. Still can't figure out if that was Loki-Loki or Gabriel-Loki, but if this is 'our' universe (and I'm not convinced it is), my money is on Gabriel.

Dean in the photo was both a surprise and not. Very cool though.

The Teen Wolf Movie

Yeah, it has issues. I mean, like, Teen Wolf isn't Teen Wolf without Stiles, for a start.

But I'm glad I watched it. Happy to add it to the canon of a fandom that completely consumed me at the time.

Allison doesn't even look like Allison. I wish actresses would stop doing shit to their faces, it's disconcerting.
WTF when did Derek find time to have a 15yo kid? And where is this kids mother?

Trying to work out the timeline here (tho TW timelines were always notoriously unreliable). If Allison has been dead for 15 years and Eli is 15 he would have been born the same year Allison died.

Derek was banging Jennifer the crazy druid lady that year. Peter killed her, right? Right?

So who the hell is this kids mother?

Nudge the timeline and perhaps Derek was making a baby the season before. While he was also making a bunch of teenage werewolves 🤷‍♀️

Nudge it again and he was sowing his seed pre-canon.

I seem to recall an entire season of TW covered only part of a year, perhaps only six months per season, maybe less. So it's feasible Derek had a kid the entire run of the show and we never knew about it.

But did he?

Now it's entirely possible there was some throwaway line I missed in the final season in regards to a kid, but if so, I don't remember it. I have only watched it the once. Unlike the other seasons, that I thrashed, over and over and over again.

Someone decided it was a good idea to post a 15 word 'fic' to AO3 tagged wincest that was essentially 'Chuck made Dean kill Sam cos he thinks incest is icky' and holy god that kind of shenanigans pisses me off.

Can't they find enough wincesties on twitter to harass? Have they all blocked them already so they've got to post stupid shit to AO3 because hating a ship and its shippers are their entire personality?

Anyway, they're wrong. Chuck thinks wincest is awesome. Why the hell else would he have made the boys so erotically codependent?

I'm seriously considering making a 'prompts' website that's half public service and half personal dumping ground for the vast collection of prompts and plot bunnies I'm never going to use.

Stronger in Numbers turns 10 Years Old

My very first (of many many) Teen Wolf fics, I wrote SiN in complete isolation. I was late to the fandom, and had two entire seasons to mainline before I was caught up with everyone else, and before I'd even read any fic, I started planning Stronger in Numbers, or, And Will He Starve Without Me.

I wrote it over the course of a month, still forgoing any other fic for fear of being influenced. I wanted to avoid any common cliches and tropes ('sour wolf' ring any bells?) as well, i remember that being quite important to me at the time.

I wrote the entire thing before I started posting, and edited as I posted, over the course of 10 or so days.

I'm pleased I isolated while writing. I'd never written knotting before, never read it either, so I did some rather awkward research 🤣 and then forged ahead, and it came out markedly different from the majority of Teen Wolf fic that was out there at the time.

That's not going to change, unless he can convince Derek to trust Scott and the hunters, because it's the only way they're going to chase the Alpha Pack out of town.

Of course, that only solves two out of three.

Desperation turns 10 years old

Sometime early in 2011, I started writing a Harry/Draco* fic for my oldest, bestest, fandom friend, venis-envy.

It took me two years 🤣

Finally, on the 22nd of January, 2013, I posted a fic with the following authors note:

This story was begun sometime early in 2011 for venis-envy's birthday in March of that year. I wrote about a third of it then, gave it to her with the intent of finishing it soon after. Long story short, it took me over a year to finish writing the story, and the better part of the next to edit the thing. Finally, it's done. It remains my first foray into the Harry Potter fandom, though I've written quite a bit of Harry/Draco fic since (lots of unposted stuff floating around my hard drive).

The most notable thing about it is the entirely weird POV. It was never meant to be a long fic, and the first person Draco written as if he's speaking to Harry (what I've come to think of as the I/You POV) never would have occurred to me as a good idea if it had been. Regardless, it is what it is and it was a very interesting endeavour, to say the least.

Happy infinitely-belated Birthday, my darling venis-envy.

Still working on the fuck or die that distracted me from Seventeen Months.

I entirely handwrote chapter 2 and now I have to find the motivation to transcribe it.

Handwriting is a completely different experience to writing directly on the computer. There's a lot less second guessing and far far more 'vomit it out and fix it later', which is a good thing actually.

Desperation is 10 years old. Like, I have older fic, but I never really noticed when milestones came and went. I feel like I should do something but I'm not sure what.

Woops I devoured season 6 of Outlander in two nights and now I have nothing to watch 😭

We knew that ChatGPT had scraped AO3 but this TIME article is the first confirmation from a news organization I know of that has explicitly confirmed a fic was used in training.

...and also implores fans to update their blanket statements after a podficcer was discovered to be monetizing the work of other fans without explicit permission.

I have far too many fediverse accounts, but I went and made a new one on Takahē. It's still in development, but it looks especially promising because it allows you to have multiple (and entirely separate) identities with just one account.

I haven't seen that kind of function on the fediverse since Hubzilla, and off the fediverse on Fanexus.

It could be rather attractive to fandom, because we often do have different identities for different fandoms, or for different tropes or pairings, or just for separating our 'wholesome' and NSFW fanworks.

Weird. Of course, I do most of my web writing in markdown, so even for idiomatic and 'bring attention to' semantics,  and  will remain for me.

But why couldn't they just kill them? Let them fade into obscurity? This will only encourage the continued use of them for formatting. Ick.

I got distracted from Seventeen Months and started a wincest fuck or die that was supposed to be a quick PWP but is rapidly getting out of hand.

Speaking of fuck or die, I feel like I write this trope (or variations of it, AMTDI, sex pollen) a lot, but looking at my tags, maybe not? There's 4 or 5 of fuck or die and sex pollen, probably a little crossover when I've double tagged, dunno, I haven't cross-referenced yet, and 8 AMTDI.

So relatively a small proportion of the almost 200 fics on my AO3.

Likely a larger proportion in the wincest ship, because how else do you get two brothers to fuck?

I'm up to season 5 of Outlander. It's one of those shows that's so hard not to watch just one more episode so I've had some late nights.

During this first week of the year, I've been looking back on this little tradition of mine. I never ever thought I'd keep it up so long, I've never been a big 'blogger', but apparently I've found my format.

I started in September last year, but it feels like I've been at it longer than 3 or 4 months. Perhaps because of the vast array of fandom happenings in that time.

My early posts were on pillowfort only 🤔 Interestingly enough I got no engagement there. Its part of why I recently decided to abandon my pillowfort 🤷‍♀️

There was also an epic shit ton of twitter wank in those early days. I was deep in the discourse over there, so much so that if I was into the same stuff on the fediverse I'd probably be breaking the rules of my instance 😂

I don't miss it.

Added the Ghosts Don't Sleep series.

Been fucking around a lot with the out-of-the-box capabilities of 11ty. Collections are powerful AF and I'm realising I don't have to hardcode all the monotonous stuff like lists of fic or recs. All I need for a lot of stuff is a file that's entirely frontmatter and a snippet of templatey stuff and boom, perfectly formatted lists of things ❤️

I'm also working on writing an RSS file from scratch, and doing that manually seems ridiculous after all the automagical stuff but I'm not ready to try and make it do that yet.

Started writing a sequel to Seventeen Years. It'll be called 'Seventeen Months', where Dean and Xander team up on a hunt. Remains to be seen whether they'll hook up or not, I'm flying by the seat of my pants here.

Invisible City and The Empress but all these subtitles are hell on my ability to do anything else while also watching TV.

If anyone has any recs I'm all ears - I like magic and monsters and dystopia and sci-fi and time travel and historical drama.

Maybe it's time to do an Outlander rewatch.

It won't let me edit my bio.

It won't let me block people (there was one last dick that needed to be got rid of).

It won't let me do a most recent download of my archive (the one I have is a month or so out of date at this point).

I've shifted from Fandom.ink to Fanglitch.space. I still absolutely rec fandom.ink as a fediverse instance especially for newbies because of its longevity and administration. I moved because I love markdown and Fanglitch has markdown 😁

Website Updates

Added my Mastodon feed to the site. It uses the rss feed every masto account has and javascript to embed it in the site. I'm toying with the idea of adding my DW feed too, because I'm really missing having the blog posts on my front page.

Added a bunch more fic. Have decided to shift my crossposting focus to my website rather than Squidgeworld. I have ultimate control on my site and due to 11ty, adding my fic and having it listed and sorted is really really ridiculously easy.

Added a MacGuffin Generator to go with the Monster Generator.

Some fucker is publishing other people's fanfiction on Amazon. I feel sorry for people who'd get suckered into paying for fic that's available for free on AO3, but I'm fucking horrified that someone thinks it's perfectly fine to steal fic off AO3! And publish it! For money!

There is so much wrong here.

Anyway, at the link above, there's a call for help to identify the authors so they can file DMCAs.

Google is blocking AO3 in Germany due to pressure from the German government over some new 'protect the children' legislation.

Don't use google, people. DuckDuckGo is right there and you can use bangs, which are really nifty. Check out the AO3 bangs!

There is so much twitter fuckery going on at the moment I can't keep up. TL;DR elon banned mastodon, masto urls were apparently malware, then any competing social media links were against the rules, and then they weren't, also 51% of twitterers told elon to go away and now he's quitting but probably his investors told him to get the fuck out cos he's just doing crazy shit and haemorrhaging $$$.

I'm finding it hard to fathom why anyone is still using that site, to be quite honest.

Midnight Mass

Spoilers

Midnight Mass is all the 'Catholicism is weird what with eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Christ' meta in one thoroughly entertaining slow burn no-one-ever-says-vampire show package. The final episode is this big horror-movie-esque story of survival where the only survivors are the two plucky kids except I was literally crying at the end because I knew all the characters and their storylines in a way only an entire season of TV can do and it was also really beautiful.

So yeah. 10/10. Would recommend.

Musty banned the official Mastodon account and kicked a bunch of journos off Twitter and Mastodon signups started spiking again. This probably won't affect fandom, but I do hope the journos that come over don't take tips from or join journo.host.

Twitter is also blocking Mastodon URLs. This isn't actually 'new' news, I noticed it doing that some weeks ago when a twitter user reached out after having trouble sharing their new masto link.

This is the first time I've seen it block fandom.ink, however.

I was also unable to edit my twitter bio in order to route around the url ban, I'm guessing because I left my display name as my masto url. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes until accounts with masto links in bio will be banned.

Posted the first chapter of Stellar Collision, my new wincest fic. It'll be 3 chapters when done, now I just have to write the remaining two chapters.

Finally knocked Archive 81 off my watchlist. I might have stayed up way too late the second night because it was that good.

Watched the last couple eps of The Peripheral. I'm not familiar with the source, but seems like they left it open for another season.

Half Bad: The Bastard Son and the Devil Himself sucked me right in and I stayed up way too late finishing it. Very good.

Staying up way too late binging Netflix shows is an ongoing theme for me apparently.

Russian Fic Exodus

I've noticed a fair amount of Russian fic posted to AO3 recently, and it looks like there may be an exodus or backup going on.

AI Fic? It already exists.

Evidence has been found that AI's are being trained on AO3. I'm uncomfortable, but not panicked, though I've taken the precautionary step of locking my fic to archive only for the moment.

I don't think that training AI's using publicly accessible fiction is straight up plagiarism, and until there's evidence that AI's are lifting sections of existing works that'll remain my stance, but I do think AI's being used to write fiction is going to be kind of soulless, and maybe even a little bit cheaty?

It's got to be tempting. Blocked? Prompt the AI to give you your next scene starter, or the entire scene, or hell, just let it write the entire fic and then collect all the sweet sweet kudos without having to do any actual work.

But when I'm reading, I want the fic to be emotion-heavy. I X-out of boring fic, whether it's got all the right tags or not, and I do believe AI fic is going to be boring as hell. You can have plot twists and action and all of that shit but if there's no human emotion I'm gone.

AI has already been used to write fanfic. I tried to read it, but it lacked any kind of emotion. Someone died and I didn't care. Sure, a human being can absolutely write boring fic, but I find it very hard to believe that an AI is going to be able to write fic that has heart and soul.

And one has to wonder if the cycle of scraping and writing and scraping and writing continues--and if AI fic becomes an acceptable way of writing--what AI fic will be like in the future.

Soulless, at the least. And probably really shitty.

I'm doing A Lot of reading these last couple weeks. I've gotten into the habit of consuming 2-6k words of an evening before bed and it's actually quite inspiring. It makes me want to write.

I was very good and limited myself to two episodes a night so I could savour it and make it last but it was still over far too quickly.

The issues we reported allow any attacker to access all data, including private posts, private messages, shared media and even deleted direct messages. This also includes private email addresses and phone numbers entered during login.

It's interesting the different standards social networks are held to depending on whether they're a commercial interest or community run. Commercial networks seem to get a pass based on slick shiny apps, don't get questioned on privacy or safety, while community run networks are vilified for misunderstood policies and functions.

Some destiel shippers have finally had enough and have gone public over the harassment they've suffered by a group who put out how-to guides on reporting printed fic. Link to commentary on Mastodon by Morgan Dawn

While my own sensibilities veer away from anything that could be remotely tied to the commercialisation of fanfic (I'm assured this was never the intent in this situation), this kind of organised harassment by fellow fans is quite horrifying.

Transformative vs Consumptive Fandom

fogsrollingin directed me to this conversation on reddit which is a (generalised) definition of curative vs transformative fandom.

This subject has been an interest of mine for many years, and is informative and relevant on its own, but it reminds me of the changes that have come about in the last half-decade or so in fandom.

It has become evident that the influx of fandom goers resulting from the mainstreaming of fandom is changing the dynamic once again. Curative fandom seems much the same, cis-dude heavy and off over there somewhere.

But residing in the same spaces as transformative fandom there is also consumptive¹ fandom. Vast swathes of fans who consume fic and art voraciously but don't produce anything. And while the majority are no doubt innocuous and appreciative of the fanworks transformative fandom creates, there is a loud contingent who are entitled and offensive in their demands.

They demand fic updates, they tell creators that the fic would be better if it was a different ship, they harass other fans for shipping the wrong ship...

Yep, it seems the majority of antishippers are consumptive fans, who never produce anything but are toxic in their insistence that all of fandom produces and consumes fanworks in the right way and if they don't they'll be sorry.

Like curative fandom skewing cis-male, consumptive fandom has its own demographic, and it skews overwhelmingly young. This explains a lot in regards to the entitlement and insistence that everyone else should do fandom in a way that they deem right and correct and moral (kids and teens overwhelmingly seem to view the world with them at the center).

But as transformative fandom tends to be more grown-up and logical, it's difficult for us to share the same spaces as the consumptive kids. In the past, antishipper harassment had a chilling effect, forcing out and shutting up transformative voices, curbing creativity and slowing the production of new works (personal experience - previously prolific, my output slowed to a crawl circa 2016 onwards, and I avoided consumptive-heavy spaces for years).

But it's difficult to imagine how transformative and consumptive fans can exist entirely separate from each other like transformative and curative do, because the consumptive fans are consuming our works. They followed us from tumblr to twitter and to AO3 and are likely following artists from twitter back to tumblr as I write this.

Of course Dreamwidth exists in a separate (and oh so calming) bubble. My experience is that it's almost entirely transformative, and I'm not opposed to sharing space purely with those who, generally speaking, share my values.

Fandom spaces on Mastodon, too, are much the same. Though there's entire instances populated by yet another group, which I've started referring to as neo-proshippers, but that's another post entirely and I think I've already gone on too long 😁

Please don't take any of this as me looking down upon the many many fans who lurk or just read or just reblog. I've known many of these fans over the years and they're fantastic, they make the best rec lists and leave the best comments and generally are a part of transformative fandom. The 'consumptive' fans, as I've dubbed them, are a whole 'nother thing entirely, and they're new (last 5-10 years), and they come like locusts, devouring fandoms en masse before moving onto the next.

I made a fucking character shrine! I'm rather excited, can you tell? It's a Dean Winchester fansite, and it was so hard to drop the 'everything to everyone' mindset for some reason but I came out the other end with something that was by me, for me, and I'm pleased with that fact. Here tis: i know how my story ends

You may have noticed the blog is no longer on the website 👀 TL;DR it involves a new distro on my computer and a broken 11ty site, so I rebuilt it without the blog, and actually I'm really excited to have an excuse to start using Dreamwidth again.

Dreamwidth journals have RSS feeds by default (find mine here), RIP to my shortlived RSS feed on the website 🤣 but I've still got one, so!

My shiny new website theme was inspired by Wednesday, because I'm suddenly obsessed.

After taking 3 months away from writing (indeed away from fandom as a whole), I'm starting to feel the itch again. I poked through my writing folder and found something I finished but didn't post before my hiatus.

So I'll probably start by editing and posting that. At some point. I'm not in a hurry.
